It's all about the details

I recently wrote an essay called "It's not like choosing the color of her hair" about white writers who use a white default when describing African-American characters. I'm not guiltless here, and I wrote about that on my website in this post. This is fairly personal stuff, but I guess there are some things I just need to work out.
