Something to smile about

Ruth Fremson photo at RAM clinic in LA

There are some good people in this world---in particular, the doctors and dentists who volunteer for Remote Area Medical, an organization that sets up clinics to provide free medical and dental care to patients who do not have any insurance. Pictured above is Michael Bettis who received a new set of teeth this August thanks to the work of Dr. Daniel Chang and other volunteers at RAM. The photo captures Mr. Bettis smiling, something he did not do for five years because he had 14 broken teeth which he could not afford to repair.

You can hear, see and read more about his story and about the work Remote Area Medical did at their 8 day Los Angeles clinic in this audio slide show by Ruth Fremson for the New York Times. Smile on!
