A moment of kindness

The day was cold and blustery. I wore baggy jeans, an old scarf, and my rattiest jacket. I had removed my hat before driving to the store, and not bothered to brush my hair. When I brought my purchases to the register, I looked every bit as bedraggled as I felt.

A man stood behind me and addressed the cashier. “I know there’s a faster line, but then I wouldn’t be behind someone so pretty.”

I turned. He was an older gentleman, schooled in flattery for flattery’s sake. I smiled and thanked him. He smiled in return.

It’s completely sappy, but good cheer followed me the rest of the day.
